"Mathematical Sciences and a Balanced Federal Budget"
Abstract: The current attempt to balance the federal budget is likely to have a big impact on science funding. This talk will describe the situation with regard to the funding of mathematical sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF). The talk will focus on the Division of Mathematical Sciences at NSF, the present situation within the Division, the recent past, and some possibilities for the future. In particular, it is hoped that the talk will generate some discussion about how the mathematical sciences community can help the Division set priorities for the future.
