"Latent Variable Models for Evaluating Undergraduate Performance"
Abstract: The use of grade point averages (GPA) to summarize student performance within the American undergraduate system has had catastrophic consequences. It has resulted in unjust evaluations of students enrolled in difficult curricula, decreased enrollments in classes perceived as demanding, and a general reduction in educational standards.
In this talk, I discuss an ongoing project to reverse these trends through the use of more rational models for evaluating student performance. The project centers on the development of statistical models for interpreting undergraduate grades in light of their ordinal nature. Implications of these models will be illustrated through an analysis of five years of Duke University undergraduate grade data.
