"Burn-in Makes Us Feel Good"

Abstract:

Burn-in is a commonly used procedure in life sciences and in simulation. However, there are many misconceptions about it, mainly in the engineering community. These misconceptions stem from a failure to appreciate the subjective nature of probability, and the role of utility in burn-in in burn-in operations. The purpose of this talk is to articulate these issues, using a minimum of mathematics but an abundance of illustrations. Our striking conclusion is that the famous "bath-tub curve" of reliability and biometry has no reality!; rather it is a figment of one's imagination.
